Preparing for Postpartum – What Canadian Mothers Should Expect

The first few weeks after childbirth can be emotional, messy, and transformative. Here’s how to prepare for postpartum life in Canada.

1. Physical Recovery
Expect vaginal soreness, bleeding, and fatigue. Use pads, pain relief spray, and ice packs. Call your provider for fevers, clots, or pain.

2. Mental Health
Mood swings are common (baby blues), but if sadness or anxiety lasts beyond two weeks, seek help. Postpartum depression is treatable and support is available.

3. Breastfeeding Support
Public health nurses and lactation consultants are available through hospitals or local health units.

4. Infant Checkups
Your baby will need regular doctor visits for growth tracking, vaccines, and screenings.

5. Rest and Nourishment
Sleep when you can, eat nourishing meals, and accept help. You are healing and learning.

You’re Not Alone: The fourth trimester is real. Take it slow, and remember — you’re doing great.
