New Parenthood Should Be Fun!

Navigating the Canadian Healthcare System During Pregnancy

You have options – and it’s okay to ask questions. Here’s how to navigate prenatal care in Canada.

1. Care Providers
• Family doctor (early care)
• OB-GYN (hospital birth, high-risk)
• Midwife (low-risk, home or birthing centre)

2. What’s Covered
• All prenatal visits, tests, delivery, and postpartum care are covered by your provincial health plan

3. Midwife Access
• Contact midwives directly in most provinces.

4. Extra Services
• Public health nurses, prenatal classes, and 24/7 phone lines (Telehealth Ontario or 311 BC) offer additional support.

5. Choosing What’s Right
• Think about your health, comfort with providers, pain preferences, and proximity to facilities.

Your Care, Your Choice: You deserve care that fits your needs and values.
